So much different, and yet so much the same!

So much different and yet so much the same

I met Liv many many years ago when she was pregnant. We were in a class together at Ryerson, and when we realized we were both taking the same train back and forth from Oakville to Toronto, we began riding together. I was already a Leader and mother of four, she was expecting her first. We naturally talked a lot about breastfeeding and babies, and she became a regular at our Group. I helped her with the challenges she had when little Crystal was born, and I was with her for the home birth of baby number two.

Last year, deep into the pandemic, that first baby had her own first child. When breastfeeding wasn't going well, Liv put Crystal in touch with me. We used FaceTime to connect so I could see her beautiful baby, and try to help her figure out what was going wrong. Her sweet husband held the phone and followed my directions "a little higher - a little to the left - no the other left" so that I could see more clearly what was going on. She was very determined to make breastfeeding work, and as I watched her adjust her baby's position at the breast, I was reminded of that time many years ago when I was sitting on a chair beside the bed and helping Crystal's mother feed her. So much different, and yet so much the same!

It took more than one conversation to sort things out, but she sent me a follow-up photo a month or so ago. That baby boy is walking now, still so cute - and still breastfeeding.
